If you're planning a trip to Geneva, there’s a great benefit that many travelers don’t know about: the Geneva Transport Card, which allows free access to public transportation during your stay. In this post, we’ll explain who can get it, how it works, and what your options are if you’re staying just outside the city — for example, in Ferney-Voltaire.

What is the Geneva Transport Card?

The Geneva Transport Card is a free digital card that allows unlimited travel on Geneva’s public transportation network (zone 10) during your entire stay. It includes:

  • Buses and trams (TPG)

  • Local trains (SBB/CFF)

  • The iconic yellow water taxis on the lake (Mouettes Genevoises)

It’s a super convenient tool for exploring the city stress-free.

Who can get the card?

This card is only available to guests staying at officially registered accommodations within the Canton of Geneva, such as approved hotels, hostels, and campsites.

⚠️ Important: If you’re staying just outside Geneva, such as in Ferney-Voltaire (France), you are not eligible for the Geneva Transport Card. In that case, you’ll need to purchase your own tickets or travel passes. How does it work?

✔️ If your accommodation qualifies, you'll receive a link by email 3 days before your arrival to download the card on your phone.
✔️ You can also request a physical version at the front desk.
✔️ The card is valid for your entire stay and does not need to be scanned when boarding. Just show the QR code if requested during an inspection.

Arriving at the airport?

At Geneva Airport, you can get a free 80-minute public transport ticket from the machines near arrivals. It’s perfect for getting to your accommodation before your card becomes active.

What if I’m staying in Ferney-Voltaire?

Ferney-Voltaire is just a few minutes from Geneva and a great place to stay close to the city. If you’re based here:

  • You can take bus lines 66 or F directly into Geneva.

  • You’ll need to buy tickets that cover the cross-border zone.

  • Mobile apps like SBB Mobile, TPG, or Fairtiq let you buy and validate tickets easily.

💡 Travel tip: If you’ll be using public transport daily, weekly or day passes may be more economical than individual tickets.
