Every December, Geneva lights up with one of its most iconic traditions: La Fête de l’Escalade.
In 2025, the celebration will take place from Saturday, December 13 to Sunday, December 14, filling the Old Town with history, music, and vibrant festivities.

A Brief Look at the History

The festival commemorates a defining moment in Geneva’s past.
On the night of December 11–12, 1602, the Duke of Savoy attempted a surprise invasion by scaling the city walls. Against all odds, Geneva’s citizens defended their home, preventing the attack.

This victory has been celebrated ever since, evolving over centuries into a beloved public festival filled with symbolism and community spirit.

What Happens During the Fête de l’Escalade?

During the weekend of the celebration, the Old Town transforms into a lively open-air stage. Expect:

  • Historical parades with hundreds of participants wearing 17th-century costumes—soldiers, artisans, musicians, and citizens marching through the streets.

  • Traditional music featuring drums, trumpets, horse-mounted guards, pikes, and even historical cannons.

  • Craft stalls and local food stands, serving warm drinks, handmade goods, souvenirs, badges, and historic publications.

  • Atmospheric night scenes with torches, lanterns, costumes, and illuminated streets that bring centuries-old traditions back to life.

  • And of course, the iconic chocolate marmite, filled with marzipan vegetables—a sweet tribute to the city’s victory and one of the most beloved family traditions.
